Sumita Banerjee
Customer Service Administrator
Tennessee Department of Human Services

Sumita Banerjee joined the Executive Team at the Tennessee Department of Human Services in the role of Customer Service Administrator in the spring of 2012. As the Customer Service Administrator, she leads the Office of Customer Service in addressing the internal and external customer experience at the Department of Human Services. The Department serves more than two million Tennesseans and receives a significant volume of customer issues and inquiries. The Office of Customer Service helps address needs identified through Governor Haslam’s Customer Focused Government Initiatives.

Sumita previously served as the Policy Advocate for the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth. Sumita represented the Commission’s position on proposed policy, legislation and actively worked to build partnerships and collaborations around children’s issues with other advocates, community and state agencies and service providers. Prior to joining the Commission, Sumita was an International Student Adviser at Vanderbilt University and the Director of the TeenPEACE program. Through her work at TeenPEACE, Sumita provided individual and group therapy for youth who came in contact with the juvenile justice system and/or experienced dating or domestic violence.

Sumita holds a B.A. from Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City and a M.Ed. from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Sumita is a graduate of the state’s leadership program, LEAD Tennessee. She also participated in the Young Leaders Council and Nashville Emerging Leaders. Sumita serves on the Board of Directors for Hands on Nashville and the Oasis Center. Sumita also serves on the Community Advisory Boards for the Legal Aid Society and Nashville Public Radio.
